Logic Pro 8 USB Microphone monitoring

Does anyone have experience with monitoring a USB mike plugged directly into a laptop? There are two problems:
I can't monitor while recording at all, and have to switch the input device from AKG (which lets me record but not monitor) to Built-in input (which lets me listen but not record). What am I doing wrong here?
Is there a way to have both input devices activated at the same time, or another way to monitor a USB mike through Core audio?

You could try creating an Aggregate Device in the Audio MIDI Setup that combines the two. But the real solution - and it may not be what you want to hear - is to upgrade to v.9. In Logic 9, you can set the audio drivers for the input and output separately. And I suspect it was intended for exactly these types of situations.

Actually, it does. When you are on the Audio page of the Audio/MIDI Setup Utility, there is a command under the Audio menu called "Open Aggregate Device Editor".

To learn more though, type in "Combining multiple audio devices" in the Audio MIDI Setup help menu.

Thank you Eli. The aggregate device did not work at first until someone at Sweetwater pointed out to me that the Built-in output has to be at the top of the list of drivers. Go figure. Anyway, just in case anyone else has the same problem here is a step-by-step:
Using a the AKG Perception 120 USB Mike with Logic 8
Plug in the mike
Open Applications>Utilities>Audio MIDI setup
Pull down the Audio menu and click: Open Aggregate Device Editor
In the editor click + to add a new aggregate device
Select the AKG Mike and also select Built-in output
Important!: Drag the Built-in output to be the first item in the list.
Click the radio button for the clock next to the AKG mike
Click Done.
Launch Logic
In Preferences select Audio
Select Core Audio
In the device select Aggregate device.
Click Apply changes
