Logic Pro 9 Varispeed

First, I found Varispeed to be a very useful tool for me. I always have a hard time determining the final tempo of a piece. Often that is because while writing I am still working things out and my ears haven't gotten accustomed to the piece.

So, I used Varispeed and it worked great for a few passes then suddenly I was getting System Overload messages and it wouldn't play at all. The only thing I did was change the I/O Buffer size from 64 to 1024. You would think that would help, right? But it still played fine with that setting for a pass or so. I tried a couple of tempos and I was actually getting closer to the original tempo when it stopped working.
Anyone have a similar experience?

Also, I tried to bounce and it did not bounce at the new tempo. If one decides on a new tempo, is going in and using Flextime on every single region the thing to do? That sounds labor intensive.
TIA

I recently had to do some bouncing of a project at various tempos and used varispeed. Seems to me I had to do it in real time to make it work - might want to try a short snippet to see if that does the trick.

Flextime is applied per track, then disabled/enabled per region.

That sounds labor intensive.

Faster than re-recording everything at a new tempo......
