Logic Pro 9 viewing score while recording another part?

How can I view the score for one track while recording on another track? I need to see what notes and chords are on a track so I know what to play on another. When I open a score window for one track, it immediately switches when I start recording on another.

Turn off link mode in the score window. It will then retain the current display when you start recording.

PS: This is a very frequently asked question.

I'm revisiting this thread, because I am up against this problem again. I must have been dealing with midi only when I posted this before. But today, I'm trying to record a vocal part and see the midi score of the melody at the same time. I have the link button unlinked, but when I hit record the score disappears and there is just white space where the staves were. As soon as I stop recording the score comes back. Is there something about recording audio that makes the score disappear?

??? That's not occurring here.

Open a new Empty project, add some MIDI, (even a green loop), then with unlinked score in view, record audio.

White space still appearing?

I opened a new project, like you said, and it worked okay, so I opened last night's project. I had a score of several tracks displayed, when I recorded, and it worked okay, but when I closed that window and opened just the melody midi track, I again experienced it blanking out. Then I realized I was playing from the beginning of the piece where there was no melody, because I had the cycle on. So I tried in the location that was giving me grief yesterday, where there is notation, and it worked. So I don't know what was wrong yesterday, but it was probably user error of some kind. I can't reproduce it today.

What you describe makes sense as the Score Editor will only display regions that exist. It will not provide blank staves unless there is a region. Logical eh?

Try this: Place the Playhead at the bar one. Select the first region, then ⌘+[ (command, left bracket) click which will extend to region to bar one. You should now see a blank staff in the score editor versus blank white.

(The above is something I learned in Asher's book "Scoring with Logic Pro")

That does not work for me in the Arrange window. What is the name of that command? I tried searching in Key commands for "extend region" but could not find it.

At some point, maybe it was an upgrade, many of my familiar key commands changed. For example, return to the beginning used to be 0, now it is return and record used to be some number, now it is R, so maybe your commands are different than mine. There doesn't seem to be a way to search by typing the key combo.

Enter "set region" in the Key Commands search box which will bring up the following under the "Arrange and Various Editors" heading:

"Set Region/Event/Marque Start to Playhead Position"
and
"Set Region/Event/Marque End to Playhead Position"

These are very useful key commands: ⌘[ and ⌘]. But yours may be different.
