Logic Pro (X) When you turn off the flex icon in a track lane does it stop working?

There are like three places to turn flex on and off and it is confusing. For example, if I want to put a fade or chop up the audio, I have to turn flex off in the lane. Under what circumstance does it still work when an icon is off?
I sometimes get a message when switching from one flex mode to another, for example if I work on pitch and then notice the timing is bad, if I switch to another mode it threatens that I will lose all flex pitch data. Workaround?

I may be wrong, but last time I looked you could not have Flex time and Flwx pitch. I hope it has changed, but I'm not sure.
